Waitress Back At Work

By Jeff Lippman - September 11, 2007

Oklahoma's Amanda Thompson is known as "The Waitress" on the streets of Chicago - her home town - because, as she says, "I am serving people."

After being an out-of-work waitress for the past five months due to rehabilitating her surgically reconstructed right shoulder, the Waitress is back and ready to proudly serve Norman and her Oklahoma teammates.

Thompson has been cleared for full athletic participation and she is chomping at the bit to get back in the gym.

"I'm excited to be able to get back to work at 100 percent," Thompson said. "I've never had an injury keep me away from the court before, let alone for five months."

This news comes at great relief to her coach and teammates who will depend on the sophomore forward to take some of the pressure off Courtney Paris on the blocks. Thompson is a superb rebounder and a ferocious scorer who has a tough street mentality.

Last season as a freshman, she averaged just over 15 minutes a game and still was third behind the Paris sisters on the team in boards with more than five a game. And remember, she played much of the end of the year in severe pain.

With her shooting shoulder now healed, watch for Thompson to blossom playing next to Courtney and Ashley Paris this season. With teams focusing on the two bigs in the middle, Thompson will be able to do her thing to the best of her ability. And the best of her ability is going to turn heads in the Big 12.

Oklahoma has the deepest and most talented post players in the country. If Courtney Paris isn't enough, her sister Ashley is no slouch and neither is sophomore Abi Olajuwon - or should I call her the Dreamette?

With that kind of expected production coming from the center spot, Thompson will be free to use her rough street style of play to get all the hustle rebounds and put back lay ups that will make her one of the most important pieces to coach Sherri Coale's puzzle.
