Colonial Washington

By Jeff Lippman - October 08, 2007

George Washington was our nation's first President, George Washington will win the Atlantic 10.

Both true statements.

The Colonials of GW are receiving national recognition in multiple preseason rankings as being a Top 15 team this season, making them one of the few top-ranked squads from a conference outside of the majors. And with a team that returns four starters, one of which is a dominating 6-foot-4 center and another already garnering Honorable Mention All-American status, it's easy to see why they are getting the early accolades.

Needing just 18 wins to reach 500 for his career, coach Joe McKeown has some superb talent at his beck and call and it all starts with Beck herself, point guard and All-American candidate Kimberly Beck. The talented senior led the A-10 in assists last year while pouring in just over 11 points per contest.

Perhaps the most dominant center in the A-10, and one of the best around the country, Jessica Adair just keeps getting better. An All-Atlantic-10 selection last season, Adair is primed to break out and become an even more imposing down-low player for a team that has two of the top assist-getters in the A-10.

Already having mentioned the A-10 leader in assists in Beck, you can't forget about senior guard Sarah Jo-Lawrence, who finished second on the team in dimes and also led the Colonials in scoring at over 13 points per game.

Add in senior Whitney Allen and George Washington has the recipe to throw their names into the ring with the top teams in the top conferences like the ACC, SEC and Big East.

GW went to the Sweet 16 last year for the third time in school history, they notched 28 wins and have their sights set on bettering that total this season. For the team from the Nation's Capital, winning the A-10, making the NCAA Tournament and even advancing past the opening rounds is not enough anymore. The Colonials have earned the right to reach higher in their goals.

Like maybe the Final Four in Tampa?

Joe McKeown thinks that is very realistic.

They are the G.W. Colonials, not Colonels.

Mr. Lippman:

You took the words right out of my mouth! I too have high expectations for the women Colonials this year. As the 3 seniors have the athleticism to rival the talent you normally find in the major conferences, I concur that the A-10 should be a lock. But, once you add the size and improved skills of the Adair twins, the Colonials really have the makings of a team that should flourish in the Tournament, especially when you consider the defense they bring to every game.

I actually am a big Lady Vols fan, but, having watched the Colonials over the past 3 years due to being in DC and witnessing the talent of Kim Beck and Sarah Jo Lawrence, as a basketball fan, you have to admire the Colonials and the job Coach McKeown and his staff have done.

My only criticism of your article is that you have to learn how to spell COLONIALS!

great piece on GW. They are the colonials. You might want to correct that in the piece.
