100 Point Trees

By Jeff Lippman - November 09, 2007

Wow! Stanford was very impressive in their opening victory over Yale Friday.

The first ranked team to play, the No. 7 Cardinal destroyed the Bulldogs 100-44 in New Haven, Conn.

And they did all that while only getting eight points, three rebounds and an assist from Candice Wiggins in just 11 minutes of action. The Cardinal didn't need her, they are saving her for No. 3 Rutgers on Sunday.

The Scarlet Knights should be worried, because Stanford has a lot to prove this season after losing to Florida State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last March. And they can prove a lot immediately with a win over the national runners-up on their home court.

Aside from Wiggins, one thing Stanford has more than enough of is size - and young size at that. Sophomore center Jayne Appel only played 16 minutes and led all scorers with 20 points on 9-for-11 shooting. Freshman center Kayla Pederson started, played 17 minutes and scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

With Wiggins on the perimeter and the youngsters down low, Stanford can control a game in a multitude of ways, very much like the Scarlet Knights. For the season's third day of games, Sunday is certainly going to be fun, with not only the Cardinal and Rutgers meeting, but No. 8 UNC hosts No. 12 ASU and No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 4 Maryland tangle in the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill.

The action certainly heats up early for She's On Fire.
