Aggies Almost Upset

By Jeff Lippman - November 10, 2007

If there was one team that I felt was being ranked too high this preseason it was Texas A&M. They were left off my Great Eight and I chose them to finish second in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma.

Many people disagreed with that prediction, feeling that A&M would be the better team this season after bringing back so much from last year's team.

The Aggies got some bad news though, and it almost cost them dearly already. Senior guard Morenike Atunrase, the school's leader in blocks, underwent surgery to fix a stress fracture in her right tibia. Atunrase will most likely miss the entire non-conference portion of the schedule.

Without Atunrase, Texas A&M struggled in its opening game, winning narrowly against SMU, 62-57. The Aggies were actually down 36-26 at the half.

Senior guard A'Quonesia Franklin was destined to have a great year but got off to a slow start, scoring eight points and dishing out three assists in 23 minutes, plagued with five fouls. Junior guard Takia Starks led the team with 17 points.

Without Atunrase it looks like the Aggies will struggle a little bit and will have to work very hard to keep up their No. 11 ranking. Watch for them to lose to either Florida State on Dec. 6 or at George Washington on Dec. 20, before she is able to come back after the New Year.
