Sunday Noise

By Jeff Lippman - November 18, 2007

Sunday is generally the day of rest, but on this Sunday in women's basketball, rest will be the last thing on the minds of the teams that take the court.

From Downtown will make three appearances on this Sunday, one in Knoxville, Tenn., to see the No. 1 Lady Vols, fresh off their dismantling of No. 9 Oklahoma, take on Gail Goestenkors and No. 21 Texas.

The other two matchups take place in the Maryland-Washington D.C. area, with No. 14 George Washington welcoming No. 6 Rutgers into their gym in D.C., and in College Park, the best matchup of the day pits No. 3 Maryland against No. 4 LSU in the Preseason WNIT Final.

It's going to be a great sunday of basketball for From Downtown with's Mark Selig in College Park, Bailey Heaps in D.C. and Hunter Pavlik blogging live courtside from Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville.

It's always a great day when No. 1, 3, 4, 6, 14, and 21 all play against each other.

My predictions?

OK, for Tennessee, they shouldn't have much of a problem against an - in my opinion - overrated Texas squad. Of course if Coach G and the Longhorns pull off the incredible upset I'll eat crow. Shoot, if it happens, I'd eat something worse than crow.

Don't hold me to that.

Although Kim Beck and GW will be more than ready for the Scarlet Knights in their own house, Rutgers still feels the sting of their home loss to Stanford and will be ready for the Colonials. I like Rutgers by 10.

And in the game of all games on this Sunday, the Terps will be taken out by LSU if Crystal Langhorne can't go. She's missed several games already this season, and although Kristi Toliver has taken matters into her own hands thus far this year, averaging a near double-double with 19 points and 9.5 assists per game, without Langhorne, that leaves 6-foot-6 All-American Sylvia Fowles to run amock inside for the Tigers.

Fowles will be the key to the Tigers victory over the Terps at the Comcast Center. But if Langhorne plays, and plays well, Maryland will take this one. Basically, what I'm saying is, this is going to be a good one.

Enjoy your Sunday full of women's hoops.
