The AP Begins...

By Jeff Lippman - November 03, 2007

Saturday marked the release of the Associated Press Top 25. I definitely think the AP did a better job than the Coaches.

Although the AP ranks teams like Baylor and Ohio State (No. 15 and 16) too high, I love the fact that they included seven Big East teams in the ranking. The Big East will be an incredibly deep league this year and I think all of these teams have a shot at the Big Dance.

Of No. 2 UConn, No. 3 Rutgers, No. 18 West Virginia, No. 20 Pittsburgh, No. 21 Louisville, No. 24 Notre Dame and No. 25 DePaul, only DePaul did not make's Top 25. DePaul was listed as a team to watch.

Tennessee is of course the preseason No. 1 in the AP and received all 50 first-place votes over No. 2 Connecticut. Rutgers is No. 3, followed by Maryland and LSU to round out the top five.

Oklahoma, tabbed in the Top 10 in's rankings, grabs the six spot and in my opinion deservedly so. Stanford, North Carolina, Georgia and Duke round out the Top 10.'s Debbie Antonelli likes the way both North Carolina and Duke are looking in practice and says their newcomers can combine with the people they have back for an excellent combination of youth and experience. They made the AP Top 10, but neither made's Top 10.

I'm certainly not ruling out that I underestimated the two Tobacco Road programs. We have definitely seen Duke reload in a hurry after losing star talent, and some say Carolina might even be better without Ivory Latta.

All the release of the first AP Poll means is that the season is right around the corner. Get ready for a great year.
