Sold Their Souls?

By Jeff Lippman - December 18, 2007

I'm beginning to wonder whether or not the Arizona State Sun Devils actually sold their souls to the devil that resides in Hades. Something has to explain why the voters of both the AP and coaches polls refuse to drop the 6-4 team from its rankings.

I know people were high on this team before the season - many E-mailed to tell me of my egregious error in not including them in CSTV.com's Great Eight - but starting out at No. 12 was way too high a ranking for this group.

Their current ranking of No. 22 isn't warranted either. And the Coaches have them at No. 21 - how is this possible?

The players are playing fine. The team is just not that good.

The Sun Devils are the only team in the Top 25 with four losses. They lost at Carolina, at Oklahoma, at home against upstart Auburn and at unranked Texas Tech. So let's get this straight...they lost to every ranked team they've met and the best unranked team as well. And came within two points of dropping a contest at 6-4 unranked Iowa.

That is a Top 25 team? For the sake of women's basketball I hope not.

What about Georgia Tech at 8-1? Don't they deserve a look?

The team with the most gripe about seeing ASU ahead of them is Texas Tech. The Lady Raiders are 10-1, beat the Sun Devils and are still only receiving votes.

It's like the voters fear change.

Thursday, Dec. 20, Arizona State welcomes No. 19 Texas into Tempe. If the Sun Devils cannot pull that one out, please, for the love of basketball, voters I'm begging you, it won't hurt. For the time being, take Arizona State out of your voting vocabulary.

Well said; I was looking for the Lady Raiders in the Top 25. Put the nation on notice Were Back.
