What Had Happened Was...

First Stanford, then Georgia and now this?

Coaches aren't going to want to speak with me. Media relations people aren't going to take my calls and E-mails. Are my columns really having an eerie effect on the program's I write about?

My December Review lauded Stanford's efforts - the Cardinal lost two in a row after that. I wrote that undefeated Georgia was a team to reckon with in the SEC - they aren't undefeated any longer.

And now, my words may have coaxed an entire state into a funk.

Never A Smooth Ride

On any road to greatness, there will be bumps along the way. The bumps make the journey worthwhile. They build character. Without the bumps, there'd be no triumphs later.

Nell Fortner and the Auburn Tigers never expected to go the entire season undefeated. They never even expected to be undefeated after nine games.

But when they put their 9-0 record on the line at No. 12 Texas A&M Saturday, leaving College Station 9-1 has still got to sting a little.

Aggies Almost Upset

If there was one team that I felt was being ranked too high this preseason it was Texas A&M. They were left off my Great Eight and I chose them to finish second in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma.

Many people disagreed with that prediction, feeling that A&M would be the better team this season after bringing back so much from last year's team.

The Aggies got some bad news though, and it almost cost them dearly already. Senior guard Morenike Atunrase, the school's leader in blocks, underwent surgery to fix a stress fracture in her right tibia. Atunrase will most likely miss the entire non-conference portion of the schedule.
