Hawai'i: Injury Steals Heisman?

Based on his record-setting performance in 2006, Colt Brennan came into his senior season expecting to have another eye-popping year. A couple of injuries and 12 missed quarters of play later, Brennan left the 2007 regular season with an undefeated record and plenty of high-flying numbers, but not as many popped eyes as he was hoping for. His 4,174 passing yards and 35 touchdowns earned him not only an invitation to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation, but 54 first-place votes and a third-place finish in the final tally for the sport's most prestigious award. But despite all his successes, it is hard not to wonder - if he hadn't been injured, would the trophy belong to Colt?

The Week Of The Broken QB

Week 12 was the week of the broken quarterback. After Oregon's Dennis Dixon went down with a torn ACL on Thursday night, Hawai'i's Colt Brennan lasted only two snaps before leaving his game on Friday to nurse the concussion that took him out of the last few minutes of the previous week's win. Then on Saturday, the barrage continued, as Michigan's Chad Henne was in and out of his team's loss to Ohio State with a shoulder injury and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford was knocked out of his team's loss to Texas Tech with a first-quarter concussion.

Hawai'i: Colt Takes A Concussion

Hawai'i won again on Saturday, keeping its perhaps (given its absurdly easy schedule) far-fetched dream of a BCS Bowl alive for one more week, but the Warriors were definitely not happy as they took to the locker room after a 37-30 win over Fresno State. The problem was their star quarterback, Colt Brennan, who sustained a concussion in the fourth quarter of the game. He took the hit after throwing his 121st career touchdown pass, tying the NCAA career mark, but his status was not immediately get-up-and-go.

Hawai'i: Up In The BCS Without A Safety

Still riding an undefeated season, Hawai'i has moved as high as No. 12 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the BCS rankings, but with the meat of their schedule still ahead of them and some bad injury news suddenly upon them, the Warriors are not celebrating just yet. Starting safety Keao Monteilh injured his left shoulder in the third quarter of Saturday's win over New Mexico State, and will be out for an extended period of time. Defense is not exactly Hawai'i's strongsuit, so losing anyone from that unit, especially a starter, is not good news.

Hawaii: Colt Up And Running

After missing portions of two games already this season, Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan has had more than his fill of watching from the bench. The senior suffered a sprained right ankle earlier in the season and then re-aggravated it on Saturday against Utah State, but he practiced on Monday and is certain that he will start in Friday's road game at San Jose State. Brennan played in only five series last week, including one in the second half, before the injury took him out of the game, but head coach June Jones has said that Brennan will be fine to start on Saturday.

Hawai'i: Colt Update

The latest news on Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan is that there is no news. The nation's second-leading passer left the field in the first half of Saturday's game against Utah State with some sort of injury, although we were still not sure what it is. He was clearly in pain after taking a hit with 52 seconds to play in the first half courtesy of linebacker Paul Igboeli. Brennan had completed a short pass before Igboeli drilled him to the turf, where Brennan stayed for a few minutes before walking off the field on his own power, albeit very carefully. Brennan came back to the game for one series in the third quarter, but limped off the field shortly thereafter, finishing the evening 19-of-25 for 219 yards and a touchdown. The injury was initially reported to be knee-related, but no further updates have been released.

Hawai'i: Colt Comes Out

Colt Brennan has already missed one game due to injury this season, and although his mammoth numbers won't deteriorate too much from that single game sit-out, Brennan cannot afford to miss any more time if he still plans to make a run for the Heisman. (The trophy is far more elusive after those five picks he threw last weekend, but that's a different issue.) Unfortunately, Brennan's knee did not seem to get that memo as the QB left the game against Utah State in the second quarter with a knee injury, leaving the very capable Tyler Graunke to fill his enormous shoes.

Top 25 Updates

Week 5 is upon us and with conference matchups heating up around the country, the injury tally is climbing faster than Tim Tebow's Heisman rating. From No. 1 USC to No. 25-wanna-be Miami, everyone is dealing with something injury-related this week, but some news has been better than others.

Hawai'i: Colt Healing

The nation's most-ridiculous-numbers-ever quarterback is taking a tender step back this week. Hawai'i QB Colt Brennan sprained his right ankle last Friday, the night before leading the Warriors to a 49-14 dismantling of UNLV. Brennan plans to miss a few days of practice while the ankle heals and the swelling goes down, but he is confident that he will be able to take the field on Saturday against Charleston Southern. But just in case, he's having an MRI on the ankle and spending the week on crutches.

Busted BCS Busters

No. 19 TCU and No. 20 Hawai'i are two of the trendy picks to break into the BCS this season, and with TCU taking on No. 7 Texas this week and Hawai'i embarking on a 12-day road trip, they will need all their guns firing in order to lift themselves in the polls and take another step toward a BCS berth. As of Thursday, both teams are struggling with injuries - Hawai'i has lost a starting linebacker for two weeks and TCU has two guys dealing with aches that just won't go away.
