NIT Picking

By - January 20, 2007

Watching Connecticut play Indiana this afternoon I found myself wondering who the Huskies first round opponent would be in the NIT. When you want to know who has the inside track on an NCAA bid it’s easy enough to go to Jerry Palm’s Bracketanica website and get the latest but for those of us who really care about the NIT it’s not so simple. So I printed out a blank bracket from the NIT website and went to work. Here’s how see things shaking out.

(1) Connecticut vs. (8) Sacred Heart- Because I think Connecticut is just young and not actually bad I’ll give them a top seed. Sacred Heart is currently the top team in the NEC. If they win the regular season title they get an automatic bid to the NIT should they lose in the conference tournament.

(4) Miami-FL vs. (5) UTEP- The always tough to pick 4 vs. 5 game features a pair of teams from bigger conferences who will miss out on trips to the big dance.

(3) DePaul vs. (6) Ohio- A MAC and Big East showdown at the Rosemont Horizon will keep scalpers busy.

(2) George Mason vs. (7) Bradley- Any return trip to the Final Four for the Patriots will be the NIT Final Four.

(1) South Carolina vs. (8) Texas A&M Corpus Christie- It is my hope that the Islanders will make the NCAA Tournament and not be forced to face the UCLA of the NIT.

(4) Colorado State vs. (5) Virginia- The Cavs are good enough to make the big dance but will fall short while Colorado State will be looking for a new coach

(3) Seton Hall vs. (6) Baylor- I love Baylor but no NCAA tournament this year.

(2) Providence vs. (7) Iowa State- Nothing like first round NIT action at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

(1) Boston College vs. (8) Vermont- Rematch of the Catamounts upset win from earlier in the season.

(4) Indiana State vs. (5) Iowa- The Valley may get four or five teams again this year but the Sycamores won’t be one of them.

(3) Tulsa vs. (6) Saint Josephs- The Hurricanes may be back to the road to the glory days of the 1990’s.

(2) Illinois vs. (7) San Francisco- The Dons are under .500 overall but 3-0 in the WCC.

(1) Vanderbilt vs. (8) Oakland- The Grizz will win the mid-con but lose in the tournament.

(4) Wyoming vs. (5) New Mexico State- Cowboys point guard Brandon Ewing is one of the best players you’ve never heard of.

(3) Purdue vs. (6) UNC-Greensboro- Matt Painter will have the Boiler makers back in the big show soon enough but for now he’ll have to settle for the NIT.

(2) Washington vs. (7) Western Kentucky- Spencer Hawes will have to wait for his chance on the main stage.
