Big 12: McCarney's Honesty

By Adam Caparell - July 26, 2006

An animated and energetic Iowa State coach Dan McCarney was fun to listen to. And was pretty honest with reporters.

In comparing some of his Big 12 counterparts, McCarney said, "Some of us will never have what the others have."

Simply put, don't expect Iowa State to become a Nebraska, Oklahoma or Colorado anytime soon. Of course the Cyclones will be competitive and challenge in the Big 12, but to be able to sustain the excellence those programs have - or had - will be difficult to say the least. Not with the facilities and resources those schools have, along with the name recognition and the extensive history that Iowa State doesn't have.

Not that McCarney is down on Iowa State. They've made drastic improvements to their stadium and facilities McCarney was saying, especially after he was initially embarassed to host the media for games when he first arrived in 1995.
