MAC: It's All About Consistency

By - July 31, 2006

Speaking with the players and coaches, it certainly seems that everyone feels the model for winning the MAC title is consistency.

Coming off the MAC title last season, Akron head coach J.D. Brookhart said, "Our goal is to be more consistent this year. This is a very equal league." And based on last year's close finish, who can blame him for stressing consistency in what has become a very competitve, tight conference. The Zips won their first league title last season since joining the conference in 1992 by virtue of a three-way tiebreaker, finishing the season at 7-6 overall and a 5-3 record. If one conference game went one way or the other, that would've changed everything and the defending champs know that they can't just count on duplicating last season's record and repeat as champs.

"We don't want to settle for seven wins this year," senior Akron quarterback Luke Getsy said. "We want to win nine or 10 games."

And it looks as though the race to the 2006 MAC title may be another dogfight, atleast from what the coaches and players said here today.
