Mountain West: No BCS

By Jason Owens - July 17, 2006

Evidently BCS is a bad word (acronym -- whatever) in the TCU locker room. With several key starters returning from last year's 11-1 MWC championship team, the Horned Frogs are a popular pick to compete for the fifth BCS bowl game added to the 2006 schedule. But head coach Gary Patterson and his players won't admit to thinking or talking about it.

Preseason All-American defensive end Tommy Blake was prepared with a canned answer during TCU's turn at the media podium on Monday when prompted about the BCS.

"We don't really talk about the BCS that much," Blake said. "We talk about the conference championship. We don't want to look too ahead. We want to focus on now."

With a nod from Patterson, quarterback Jeff Ballard backed up Blake's sentiments.

Patterson has good reason for keeping BCS talk under wraps. Three times in his tenure as a coordinator and head coach, the Horned Frogs have knocked on the door and come up short. In 2000, they dropped a late game to San Jose State by three points en route to a 10-2 record. In 2003, Southern Miss ended their BCS hopes in November. And last year, SMU ended their bid early with a stunning week two loss for the only blemish on the Horned Frogs' season.

"I've always told them, it's not what they say in August; it's what they say in December," Patterson said. "If we get to early December and we put ourselves in position, then we can start talking about it. It's like the prettiest girl in school. You can talk about her all you want, but if you don't ask her to go out on a date, it doesn't make a difference."

But even in not talking about the BCS, Patterson sure did manage to say a lot about it. In fact, Patterson was one of the most media friendly (read: talkative) coaches at Monday's media day. When I sat down with other media members to interview Patterson, I had a nearly fresh tape in my recorder. A few questions later, my tape was full. Not that I'm complaining. I can always find another tape, but good interviews like Patterson aren't easy to come by.
