SEC: Man of the Hour

By - July 27, 2006

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was the last of the coaches to speak at today's media day and he got the crowd in the room to break out into laughter several times. In what at times seemed like a mix between a press conference and a stand-up comedy routine, here is a sampling of some of Spurrier's humor when he spoke with the media:

When asked about summer workouts, Spurrier said, "You don't punish them for missing summer workouts. Of course, we don't have to play 'em either."

When asked about the 12-game season and the issue of players staying healthy, Spurrier said," I don't have any problem with it," comparing it with D-II and D-III schools that play as much as 14 games in the season and "they don't have any problem with it," Spurrier said. "I coached in the USFL where we played 18 games and three pre-season games. In girls basketball during the SEC Tournament, I watch them play for four straight days and I don't hear them bit**** and complaining that they're playing too much."

When asked if there was a reason why he never has beaten Mississippi State in Starkville, Spurrier said, "Yeah, we got beat both times," and then paused before answering more in depth.
