Coaches Make Their QB Decisions

By Adam Caparell - August 21, 2006

Well, a few quarterback controversies seem to have been settled as Colorado, Georgia and Arizona State have decided who will be their starters for the season opener.

Colorado tabbed James Cox over Brian White in what apparently was an extremely close race.

No big surprise there as new coach Dan Hawkins just felt Cox was the better choice for the Buffaloes.

Georgia went with senior Joe Tereshinski over younger options, as was generally expected of coach Mark Richt (Good analysis by Tony Barnhart).

The surprise came from Arizona State. Not necessarily that senior Sam Keller was beaten out by sophomore Rudy Carpenter. The surprise was that the team reportedly went to coach Dirk Koetter saying they preferred to have Carpenter running the team instead of Koetter.

Now it looks like Keller wants out of ASU and will look to transfer. He’s a senior, but has one year of eligibility left, so he could wait out the year instead of jumping to a I-AA school.

The funny/ironic/cruel thing is that Keller was actually named the starter on Friday before Koetter changed his mind over the weekend.

Let’s hope Koetter didn’t succumb to the pressure of a handful of Sun Devils and that he made his decision based on more sound judgment. Obviously its in the team’s best interest to play the person who they’re going to trust the most, but making knee-jerk decisions like that is only going to hurt you in the long run. Koetter’s credibility has to take a hit here. No one likes a flip-flopper.

Koetter’s team has high hopes and a No. 24 ranking in the AP preseason poll. The last thing he wants to do is alienate any factions on the team. I’m not sure how close the players are to Keller, who was excited and “humbled” to be named the starter last Friday, but pulling something like that on a senior – I’d imagine – isn’t sitting all that well with some of the other veterans on the team.
