MAC: The Golden Era

By - August 01, 2006

I got the chance to sit down and chat with new Temple head coach Al Golden at MAC Media Day and it was clear in speaking with him that his is very optimitic about Temple football, who officially becomes a member of the MAC in 2007.

Golden sees a lot of potential with the Owls and that optimism is punctuated by joining the MAC conference.

"We're thrilled to be a part of this conference," Golden said. "It's a conference that put five teams into a bowl game two years ago, so it's going to be a challenge for us. But it's a challenge that we welcome because there is a goal now. There is a tangible goal and that very simply is to finish in the top third of your conference, because then you're going to have a great opportunity to go to a bowl game."

"Our expectations are more short term now. And everything stems on eliminating the things that have caused Temple to lose. If we can eliminate those things, then there is really only one thing left to do and that is have an opportunity to win. So, that's really all our focus has been on," Golden said, adding that they haven't been concentrating on other teams and are instead keeping the focus on themselves and eliminating the things that cause you to lose.

"I wouldn't have taken the job if I didn't see something extraordinary happening here," Golden said. "It's a coming together of a lot of different entities."
