Top 25 Impressions

Nothing really jumps out at you with the release of the AP's Top 25 Preseason Poll. But there is a problem or two that I have with the poll, and one of them has to do with the team from Happy Valley.

Ohio State is everybody's No. 1 thanks to their offense. Notre Dame is another logical pick at No. 2 - although there's something about the Irish, and I can't quite put my finger on it yet, that's going to prevent them from being No. 2 or better when the regular season ends. Texas at No. 3 makes sense.

Auburn at No. 4 was a little surprising to me. Not that many people have been high on Auburn if you read and listen to a lot of the preview stuff coming out. I would have expected to see them more in the range of 7-8-9 based on all the preseason publications. But I like the Tigers this year with Brandon Cox and Kenny Irons, and they're going to have some good speed on defense. I really like Auburn in the SEC.

The assertion that there is no clear cut, dominant No. 1 is a valid. Seriously. Is there any team that really demands the No. 1 spot over any one else? Is there any juggernaut out there? No. If Vince Young was back at Texas, than it would be a different story.

The only two problems I had with the poll were Oklahoma at No. 10 and Penn State at No. 19. I thought Oklahoma should have been in the teens, not the Top 10 with the loss of Rhett Bomar.

As for my other issue, maybe it's just me, but Penn State isn't going to be that good. Not with a new QB to break in with Anthony Morelli taking over for the Big Ten's MVP last season in Michael Robinson and so many holes to fill on the offensive line. Four new starters. That's a big challenge to overcome and everything starts with the offensive line. No Big Ten title for the Nittany Lions this year.

But if there's anything to take away from this poll it's this: History shows us that preseason No. 1s don't end up winning it all. Only three teams since 1993 have debuted as the preseason No. 1 and won the national championship. So don't expect the Buckeyes to be in Glendale, Ariz.
