Big Play Buckeye

By Adam Caparell - September 23, 2006

Well, was that 37-yard TD from Troy Smith to Brian Robiskie a Heisman-caliber moment, or what? That was some play Smith made – with his feet – during an otherwise less than stellar performance out of the Buckeyes offense. It was a weird game.

The final score, 28-6 in favor of Ohio State, was not indicative of the actual game. The Buckeyes did nothing in the first half and if Anthony Morelli hadn’t played like a freshman, who knows. The Nittany Lions left some opportunities out there, but, to me, it was just another example of why Penn State isn’t in the league of the big time Big Ten teams like Michigan and Ohio State. Maybe we’ll toss in Iowa’s name into that ring after the Hawkeyes game against the Buckeyes next Saturday. But that remains to be seen.

- I can’t ever remember seeing a kicking performance like that before from the Arkansas-Alabama game. Missed field goals, missed extra points. It wasn’t pretty.

Let’s just hope Alabama’s Leigh Tiffin can make it back to his dorm later tonight safe and sound. He missed an extra point and three field goals. It was brutal to watch. Push after push. To lose a game on a missed extra point in double OT has to be just excruciating for a coach. Mike Shula needs to address his kicking situation immediately and figure something out because Tiffin just can't cut it right now.

- How about ECU hanging tough with West Virginia? Steve Slaton has basically been on the sideline for the Mountaineers for a good portion of the entire second half. That’s not going to sit well with Heisman voters. He just got back into the game with about 13 minutes remaining. It looks like the humid weather could be playing a big role in this game with both teams, but the Mountaineers finally could be pulling away after scoring on a 60-yard TD.
