Bringing Down The Scarlet Knights A Notch

By Adam Caparell - September 30, 2006

An observation from yesterday: Rutgers may be ranked in the Top 25, but let’s be clear about one thing: the Scarlet Knights are not a Top 25 team. They’re not better than Penn State. They’re not better than Boston College. And they’re not better than Miami, or Arizona State, all teams that are not ranked.

Bottom line, wins and losses matter more than anything. Rutgers will move up in the rankings because they’re 5-0. But their defense nearly let South Florida tie the game at the end and Greg Schiano left what turned out to be a crucial point off the board by going for two when the Scarlet Knights didn’t need to early in the fourth. Rutgers fans can’t get all giddy just yet. Of course, there’s cause for optimism and excitement, but don’t start thinking the Scarlet Knights are world-beaters all of the sudden. Let’s see how they handle Pitt, Louisville and West Virginia in the coming weeks.

Ray Rice, Brian Leonard and Jeremy Ito are some quality college players, but Rutgers fans can't make this team out to be more than it is. A second-tier Big East squad.

- The over-under in the Notre Dame-Purdue game is 61. Considering both of these teams have practically no defense to speak of, I’d go with the over.

- No surprise Michigan State fell to Illinois. Typical Spartans right there. After their horrendous loss to the Irish last week, they back that up with an even worse loss to the hopeless Illini who are – depending on your take – the worst team in the Big Ten. John L. Smith can’t get out of his own way.
