Dog Day For Georgia

By Adam Caparell - September 23, 2006

Talk about dodging a bullet. Georgia barely beats Colorado. Colorado, the worst team in the Big 12. Colorado, the team that dropped its opener to Montana State. This from one of the country's best defensive teams, but it certainly wasn't their fault.

I only saw the end of this one, but Georgia’s inability to really get much going offensively hurt the Bulldogs the most. This performance definitely wasn't on the defense, although after two straight shutouts, I wasn't expecting 13 points out of the Buffaloes. Georgia had only one scoring opportunity in the first half as Matt Stafford’s ineffectiveness clearly was costing them.

I think it was the right call by Mark Richt to make going for it on fourth and short deep in Colorado territory with around four minutes to go. The way the college game is with the clock you can’t risk leaving opportunities out there. And obviously it turned out alright for Georgia with Joe Cox connecting on a TD strike with under a minute to go to give the Bulldogs a one point lead on their final drive.

Do we have another QB controversy on our hands in Georgia again? Cox provided a spark for the Bulldogs so we’ll have to see. I’d guess that Richt will stay with Stafford next week against Ole Miss before a big matchup with Tennesse two weeks from now.

- It looks like the weather may be affecting things a bit in Columbus. Not sure how many of us expected to see a low scoring game with the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions facing off. The over-under in this one heading in was 46. They’re not reaching that.

I think Troy Smith is going to have to use his feet more in this game than we’ve seen yet out of the Heisman Trophy front-runner. He has yet to get much going for the Buckeyes. Big players step up and Heisman winners carry their team when things aren’t going as planned. Let’s see Smith do that today.
