MAC Attack Against NC State

By Adam Caparell - September 09, 2006

Great call by Akron and coach JD Brookhart to go for the win.

With 3 seconds left, Dennis Kennedy scored the game winning touchdown for the Zips after QB Luke Getsy led a gutsy drive down the field with under a minute remaining to earn a big time upset over NC State.

The Wolfpack took a late lead, 17-14, with a screen pass on a fourth and five with a 1:07 that went for a TD.

The Zips got it back and Getsy took over. He was so poised and cool, driving into NC State territory in no time. He made two great runs for first downs, he had a two key completions. His run to the 2-yard line with three seconds left set up Brookhart to make the critical decision: go for the tie or the win.

The old mantra is you play for the tie at home, go for the win on the road.

He choose the later, and on a handoff that , the Zips snuck the ball past the goal line for a 3-point victory. 20-17 in Raleigh.

Chuck Amato is already on the hot seat and can’t be feeling too good after this one. Wolfpack fans were booing at the end of the game. I hope they were booing the results and not the call on the field because Akron’s TD looked legit.

When I saw this game on the schedule, I honestly thought it was one of the best bets for an upset. NC State was getting nine points and Akron isn’t a bad team at all with a pretty solid defense. I guess I should have played it.

Hats off to Broohart for making the call to go for it. And as for the ACC, the conference already is smarting after a lackluster Week 1 performance by many teams, including Duke’s loss to D-IAA Richmond, the fall of Miami-FSU on national TV. Now tack on a loss to a MAC team and this supposed power conference is off to a rough start.
