Got An Extra $6,000?

What’s the hottest sports ticket of all-time? Apparently it’s the BCS Championship Game.

The Jan. 8 matchup between Florida and Ohio State for the national title is setting a record at StubHub. Tickets have already gone for as high as $6,000 Wednesday and the contest has qualified as the highest-grossing event ever for the online ticket resale company.

Already sales for the game in Glendale, Ariz. have topped Super Bowl XL, Game 1 of the 2006 World Series and last year’s national title game between Texas and USC at the Rose Bowl. A ticket to this year’s championship game is costing about $350 more than last year’s, on average.

The reason for the record numbers? It’s not the buzz around the game. There’s considerably less anticipation for Buckeyes-Gators than there was for Longhorns-Trojans last year. With a one loss team in the game and an Ohio State team that many feel – myself included – will have no problem beating the Gators, the sense of impatient-ness is lacking. The latest line has the Buckeyes as a 7.5 point favorite. The only other game with a higher opening line is the Music City Bowl. Clemson’s a 9.5 point favorite over Kentucky in Friday’s game.

The real reason is simple economics. Supply and demand. With two rabid fan bases and only 73,000 some odd seats in the newly opened University of Phoenix Stadium, it’s a ticket brokers dream.

By comparison, the Rose Bowl, the largest of all the four BCS venues, seats roughly 91,000 and the priciest ticket available for this year’s game with USC and Michigan is only $1,200.

You can max at $1,143 for the best the Sugar Bowl has to offer while both the Fiesta and Orange bowls will only set you back $400 for the best seats available – mere pocket change compared to the BCS Championship Game.
