Beat Goes On At Louisville

Louisville officials are hoping that quarterback Brian Brohm will make his decision on whether to return for his senior season or enter the NFL Draft by Friday.

Brohm has until Monday to decide if he wants to end his college career and there aren’t any indications which way the junior is swaying. Most experts think he’ll be one of the first five quarterbacks chosen in the draft behind the likes of Brady Quinn and JaMarcus Russell.

But the big news surrounding the program has been the coaching change after Bobby Petrino left Louisville for the NFL.

AD Tom Jurich was true to his word after Petrino bolted to the NFL’s Falcons and went out to hire a new coach immediately. Tulsa’s Steve Kragthorpe was Jurich’s choice. Jurich didn’t want to take more than two or three days to make a decision and having a prior relationship with Kragthorpe – coupled with Kragthorpe’s success at Tulsa – helped speed up the process.

No other candidates were seriously interviewed for the position, although Cardinals offensive coordinator Paul Petrino was given some consideration. UCLA’s Karl Dorrell was on Jurich’s radar for the opening.

But Petrino’s departure came as a total shock to the program when news came down around mid-day Sunday that he was leaving. Despite claiming his insistence on being happy at Louisville – and recently signing a huge extension – Petrino left for what he felt was too good an opportunity to pass up. Considered a coaching flirt, Petrino was lured away, leaving the Cardinals scrambling to fill the vacant spot after the program’s most successful season that culminated in an Orange Bowl win over Wake Forest.

Despite reports that prized QB recruit Matt Sims is opening back up his recruiting with Petrino gone, there has been no overt indications that the sudden coaching change has drastically affected Louisville’s incoming class. But the coaching staff will have a better feel on the situation once the recruiting dead period ends on Friday.
