Not Another Gallery

INDIANAPOLIS - The NFL Combine is alive and kicking with Day 1 festivities underway at the RCA Dome and Indianapolis Convention Center. Thursday is the day for offensive linemen, kickers, punters, long snappers and tight ends to impress the scouts and deal with the horde of media.

Wisconsin tackle Joe Thomas got done holding court at the podium not too long ago where he answered the dubious question that essentially boiled down to whether or not he was going to be the next Robert Gallery.

Thomas assured everyone he wasn't, but there's plenty of hype surrounding the former Badger. Maybe not quite as much as there was around Gallery who only a few seasons ago was the second overall pick in the draft by the Raiders and is now widely considered to be a huge bust.

Thomas hasn't been preping, per se, for the Combine, but rather for the rigors of his first NFL season.

"With offensive lineman it's not like you really prep for the Combine to try and be a tenth better in the 40, or whatever you're doing," Thomas said.

No, for the offensive linemen here in Indy the interviews are most important, followed by arguably the Wonderlic test. Historically, linemen have done the best of any position on the Wonderlic so it's actually a pretty big barometer that teams use when grading offensive linemen. And other than a once in a decade quarterback, a dominate, smart and savvy offensive linemen - especially a left tackle like Thomas - is about as coveted as they come.
