Wanted: A Texas Tech Punter

By Adam Caparell - March 28, 2007

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has always been considered someone who does things a little different. His pass happy, high scoring, anything but conventional offense has brought the Red Raiders success and him a whole lot of notoriety. But then there was the extreme he was forced to go to as spring practice has commenced in Lubbock.

Apparently in need of a punter, Leach placed a classified ad in Tech's school newspaper - the Daily Toreador - seeking the services of anyone qualified.

Well, careful what you wish for. The Tech athletic department got at least 15 responses from the inquiry and Friday they'll trot out three or four candidates for a tryout before practice begins.

The need for a punter was created by a perfect storm of circumstances. The Red Raiders lost the first punter ever put on scholarship to graduation, Alex Reyes, and his backup is still mending from a broken leg.

So the eccentric Leach decided to put out the ad without any apprehension from the Tech athletic department, Red Raiders SID Chris Cook said.

Leach and the Raiders may just find a diamond in the rough, but if they find a punter worthy of kicking it's most likely only going to be for spring practice, said Cook. The Red Raider returners need to practice catching an actual punt. They've been relegated to having teammates throw balls in the air and using machines since spring practice began a week ago.
