Red Because It's Cold

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - So much for spring.

On a breezy, downright blustery afternoon at Rutgers Stadium, the Scarlet Knights were out for practice as usual as the weather around them was anything but.

Cold (38 degrees) windy (gusts of up to 35 mph making it feel like it was 28 degrees), overcast and snowing - yes, snowing - Rutgers went through a 2 hour-plus practice that had the dictinct feel of November. And everyone was freezing, anxiously waiting to get indoors.

"As long as you're out there playing you can't complain about it," Rutgers DL Eric Foster said.

At one point, as Rutgers worked on 11-of-11 red zone situations, it practically looked like a blizzard. Two minutes later, bright and sunny.

As for the practice itself, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano is happy with what he's seen out of his team, but the enthusiasm is somewhat tapered by the fact that the Scarlet Knights are a young squad who will have to fill some considerable voids at linebacker, tight end and fullback.

"We're getting better," Schiano said. "I just don't know if we're getting better fast enough.

"I try and think back to other years and watch tape from other years and see how it compares...We were more experienced last year in some spots so the product was better that you were watching on tape, cleaner."

Foster liked the progress the offensive line has been making, specifically praising Ryan Blasczyk.

Other News and Notes

Ray Rice, Rutgers' star running back, looked in mid-season form, darting and dashing through the holes, breaking off runs, scoring touchdowns and breaking tackles. Basically, he was Ray Rice.

Several receivers took a few big hits trying to catch balls over the middle on Mike Teel passes. Teal was not particularly accurate on the afternoon, but you can legitimately chalk some of it up to the gusty winds.

Top recruit Anthony Davis, the gigantic offensive lineman, was in attendance.
