Poll Position, Part II

By Adam Caparell - August 18, 2007

A few weeks after coaches around the country submitted their ballots for their own Preseason Top 25, it was the writers' turn as the Associated Press released its Preseason Top 25 poll Saturday and there's practically no difference between them.

In fact, the Coaches' and AP Top 10 practically looks the same. Aside from a swap of West Virginia and Florida and Ohio State and Louisville, everyone stays put at the top of the rankings.

The only other notable change is Auburn, who finds itself at No. 18 in the AP while the Coaches have Tommy Tuberville's Tigers pegged at No. 14. UCLA finds itself at No. 14 in the AP while the Coaches had the Bruins at No. 17.

For those who didn't make the Top 25, Missouri was given a lot more respect by the writers than the coaches, essentially holding the No. 26 position. The writers gave considerably less respect to Notre Dame than the coaches who had the Irish pegged in their Top 30.

Not sure how North Carolina State sneaked into the "Others Receiving Votes" section, garnering one point for a Top 25 inclusion on someone's ballot. The Wolfpack certainly aren't a Top 25 team heading into the season and could be hard pressed to finish at or above.500.

And now with both preseason polls out, here's one thing to keep in mind: they have no bearing whatsoever on the BCS standings. But its certainly a big deal to be ranked once that Week 1 poll comes out because if you're sitting outside the Top 20, you have almost no shot of making the national championship game - history has shown that there's just too much ground to cover in 14 weeks.

And also keep in mind that the AP Top 25, while the more prestigious of the two rankings, doesn't figure into the BCS rankings after the organization asked out of the controversial rankings a few seasons ago. So the AP Top 25 is essentially all for fun and keeping up with a tradition that dates back multiple decades.
