Shannon Speaks, Reveals Nothing

On the day after, Randy Shannon had another chance to enlighten all of us as to why he picked Kirby Freeman as Miami's starting quarterback over Kyle Wright, but the Miami coach wouldn't budge.

"Both of these guys did a great job through summer workouts and also through summer practices," Shannon said. "We just feel like Kirby is the best guy who gives us the opportunity to win the games for this upcoming season."

That was about as in-depth as Shannon got when pressed for a reason - any reason - why he went with Freeman, who has started a grand total of four games at Miami, over Wright, who has started 21.

"No rhyme or reason. We just feel like (Freeman's) going to give us the best chance to win," Shannon said.

The Hurricanes quarterback situation figures to be a fluid to say the least this season. Shannon has only guaranteed that Freeman is the starter for the Marshall game.

"Kyle Wright's our (No.) 2 quarterback, but we consider him a starter because he's had a lot of game experience and played in a lot of games for us," Shannon said.

Wright was reportedly very upset over the decision and did not speak with reporters after it was handed down Tuesday. Freeman, of course, was just the opposite.

But who ultimately gets the most snaps, it remains to be seen. Chances are we haven't seen the last of Wright just yet.

"We feel like we have two great quarterbacks who can play at any time, but like anything with a head coach you feel like you have to make a decision on one," Shannon said. " We feel very comfortable and excited about Kirby coming in."
