Don't Bet On It

By Adam Caparell - December 06, 2007

Back in the summer I tried predicting - as accurately as possible, not just a bunch of stabs in the dark - the matchups in each of the 32 bowl games. So now that we know who's playing who, I figured I'd look back and see if I got any even half right. The results, I have to say, are pretty. Pretty pathetic.

These predictions were made back in the end of June while in parentheses are the actual matchups we'll see in a few short weeks. This is embarrassing.

BCS: USC-Virginia Tech (actual LSU-Ohio State). Came very close to getting this one right. If LSU loses to Tennessee in the SEC Championship I'm half right.

Orange: Florida-West Virginia (actual Kansas-Virginia Tech). Thought the Orange was going to tab West Virginia-Virginia Tech considering how well that game would have drawn and how the two are rivals.

Fiesta: Louisville-Texas (actual Oklahoma-West Virginia). Woefully wrong.

Rose: Cal-Wisconsin (actual USC-Illinois). Neither came close to sniffing the BCS.

Sugar: LSU-Michigan (actual Georgia-Hawaii). Michigan's only BCS chance went by the wayside when it lost to Ohio State.

Outback: Ohio State-Auburn (actual Wisconsin-Tennessee). Buckeyes surely are glad - and ridiculously lucky - they're not playing in this New Year's Day bowl.

Cotton: Nebraska-Arkansas (actual Arkansas-Missouri). Half right. But I think its safe to say all Nebraska fans are actually happy they're not in this bowl game. That would have meant Bill Callahan would still be around.

Gator: Florida State-Oklahoma (actual Virginia-Texas Tech). Another team, Oklahoma, that's glad it's not playing in this one. Bobby Bowden, on the other hand...

Capital One: Penn State-Georgia (actual Michigan-Florida). I had two perennial powers in the Big Ten and SEC facing off and that's exactly what we have in this year's Capital One Bowl. Only different.

Armed Forces: BYU-Arizona (actual Cal-Air Force). Arizona was not bowl eligible. Quite appropriate the Falcons find themselves in this one.

Sun: Oregon State-Texas A&M (actual Oregon-USF). Wrong Oregon team.

Humanitarian: Boise State-Clemson (actual Fresno State-Georgia Tech).Yellow Jackets get a chance to impress new coach.

Music City: South Carolina-Wake Forest (actual Kentucky-Florida State). Kentucky back where it was last year while Wake managed to stay closer to home.

Chick-fil-A: Tennessee-Boston College (actual Auburn-Clemson). You'll see two better defensive teams in the actual matchup than the predicted.

Insight: Purdue-Texas Tech (actual Oklahoma State-Indiana). You were going to see plenty of offense with either matchup.

Independence: Oklahoma State-Alabama (actual Colorado-Alabama). Half right.

Meineke Car Care: Miami-Rutgers (actual Wake Forest-UConn). I did not see UConn making a bowl. Scarlet Knights wish they were in this one. Hurricanes wish they were in a bowl.

Liberty: Southern Miss-Kentucky (actual UCF-Mississippi State). C-USA winner is slotted into this game and obviously Southern Miss didn't win C-USA.

Alamo: Illinois-Kansas State (actual Penn State-Texas A&M). Ron Zook's glad he'll be in LA rather than San Antonio.

Texas: Kansas-Tulsa (actual TCU-Houston). Kansas did much better for itself than a weekend in Houston.

Champs Sports: Georgia Tech-Iowa (actual Boston College-Michigan State). Mark Dantonio gets the Spartans back to a bowl game in his first season while Iowa's left out.

Emerald: Maryland-Arizona State (actual Maryland-Oregon State). Another half right.

Holiday: UCLA vs. Missouri (actual Arizona State-Texas). Sun Devils had sights set on potential Rose Bowl less than a month ago.

Motor City: Central Michigan vs. Notre Dame (actual Central Michigan-Purdue). Ha, Notre Dame in a bowl game. The Irish wish beyond all belief they were playing in this one.

Hawaii: Hawaii-Houston (actual Boise State-ECU). The Warriors overachieved this year thanks to their easier than easy schedule. USF-UCF (actual Cincinnati-Southern Miss). The Birmingham bowl could has easily taken South Florida.

New Mexico: Utah-San Jose State (actual New Mexico-Nevada). Dead wrong.

Las Vegas: Oregon-TCU (actual BYU-UCLA). Oregon achieved something loftier than the Las Vegas, but fell way short of what it looked to be headed toward once Dennis Dixon partially tore his ACL.

New Orleans: Troy-SMU (actual FAU-Memphis). I figured Troy was a lock for this game from the Sun Belt. Turns out FAU snatched its first bowl berth and SMU fired coach Phil Bennett before the calendar turned to November.

Poinsettia: Navy-Kent State (actual Navy-Utah). Half right. Navy was going to this game as long as it became bowl eligible. They accomplished that by Nov. 11.

And I somehow missed the International and GMAC bowls.

Number of correct: 0.

Number half correct: 4

We'll try for our first correctly predicted bowl next June. But if this excerise taught us anything, don't bet on it.
