The Old Guard Returns

By Adam Caparell - December 18, 2007

It hasn't taken very long for Nebraska to almost entirely purge itself of the Bill Callahan era. Less than a month after the coach was officially let go, the man who was tabbed to take his place - LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini - has finished hiring his assistants and many of the names should sound familiar to Cornhusker fans.

Pelini has brought in four former Nebraska assistants who worked under Frank Solich and a few others from LSU, albeit interns. But you'd figure bringing in anyone who has studied and learned the defensive ropes with the Tigers is a considerable upgrade for the Cornhuskers considering the sorry state the defense was in last season when it suffered almost as many embarrassing performances as Tom Osborne saw in his 25 year career.

Joining Pelini will be Carl Pelini - his brother - Ron Brown, Barney Cotton and Marvin Sanders who all worked under Solich before leaving Lincoln after his firing in 2003.

Only two Callahan staffers will remain with the Cornhuskers. Shawn Watson will stay on as offensive coordinator and that means we're likely to see aspects of the West Coast Offense next season. Recruiting coordinator Ted Gilmore - who also coaches the receivers - will remain with the team as the Cornhuskers try their hardest not to lose any more recruits. At last check, Nebraska was down to 19 oral commitments from the 24 they were counting on at one point.

The only position Pelini has yet to announce is who his running backs coach will be. Pelini's going to hold off on naming someone until after he's done with his final duties with LSU, despite the fact he already knows who it will be.

Contrary to rumors floating around you can count on it not being Lawrence Phillips.
