Thursday - Recruits Feel Spirit of the Alamo

By Patrick Stevens - January 03, 2008

The battle rush of San Antonio's historical landmark infiltrated the West practice with some unexpected hard-hitting between All-American teammates...

Decisions Ahead

Cal got good word earlier than expected when Covaughn Deboskie said he committed to the Bears today.

No. 60 ranked senior OL AJ Harmon was a suprise on yesterday's list of "Expected to Announce" during Saturday's game. The Clemson commit has been wavering between the Tigers and Georgia and should make it clear this weekend.

Word around town is former Miami commit and No. 40 ranked DB Patrick Johnson to announce for LSU Saturday over Florida State and Florida.

Hits and Highlights

The East took the afternoon session of practice off, but the West did more than their share of just get on the field.

Waking everyone up on a would-be touchdown pass in the endzone, UCLA commit Rahim Moore came over from his safety spot and put one on Texas pledge WR Dan Buckner.

"That one shut Dan up," said Notre Dame commit WR Michael Floyd.

Buckner did walk back to the huddle in his not so typical voice level, but it wouldn't keep the "Mouth of the South" muzzled for long.

A couple plays later, BYU commit WR Austin Holt felt the wrath from one of his own as well. Holt was left looking at the sky for a good minute after getting popped.

"Oh get up! That wasn't even as hard as mine," goofed Buckner.

The West practice was good for some skill highlights too. Floyd took a cut-back pass and latereled in mid-air to Michigan recruit RB Sam McGuffie along the sideline for what would have been a score down the sideline.

Stanford bound QB Andrew Luck connected with WR Jameel Owens on the most precise pass of the day, down to the goal line from 30 some-odd yards out.

Talking Tough

"You've gotta be hardcore if you want to come to LA!," said UCLA Bruin bound Rahim Moore for everyone to hear after a pass break-up.

"Samantha McGuffie!," from Texas commit Dan Buckner, talking to Sam McGuffie after a blown play.

"Buckner! Simmer down," hollered West head coach Bob Jones of Aldine (Tex.) H.S., who then received a friendly waistlock takedown from his starting wide receiver when they met in the huddle. Just when you thought it was over.

Who's Next?

It looked like the Alamo was being invaded again.

Friday brings the Junior Combine featuring 500 underclassmen and practically all the Thursday arrivals turned out for Tom Lemming's interview and photo session at the historic site.

The early two most prominent names in attendance are California QB Matt Barkley and Kansas RB Bryce Brown.

Barkley comes from Santa Ana's Mater Dei high school and had a huge junior year where he shattered records left and right. He's thought to be a USC lean from several accounts.

Brown's brother Arthur is ranked No. 5 in the Class of 2008 and playing LB for the East in the All-American Bowl. The younger brother is ultra explosive and maintains a close bond with his sibling, so close that many believe they will once again team up two years from now at the University of Miami.

As for the look-test, Detroit DL William Campbell is an early Michigan pledge and monstrous in size at 6-foot-4, 300+ pounds.

"He's got an NFL body right now," Lemming said.

Sunday Best

Michael Floyd had his navy and gold Notre Dame winter hat on between lunch and the afternoon practices.

RJ Washington traded the spikes for some Oklahoma slippers. "My sister bought them for me," he said. The Sooner recruit will rest up in them after spending some time on the trainer's table at the end of practice.

Tough night after the Bowl loss for Oklahoma fans, but one Texan isn't shedding the OU logo...
