Florida Does Pretty Well

By Adam Caparell - February 06, 2008

Florida is not going to bring in the nation's No. 1 class this season. That's a given after the Gators lost out on a few recruits who changed their commitments last minute coupled with the fact Notre Dame and Alabama will be coming in with very strong classes. But that doesn't mean Urban Meyer's crew of freshmen is not supremely talented.

"We're still not having the balance we need, but we're very pleased," Meyer said on CSTV's Generation Next Signing Day show. "Our last three recruiting classes we've been very pleased with today's. They're all going to qualify it looks like. They all fit a bunch of needs and finally we got to a point where offensive line, defensive line, secondary, our numbers are right where we need them."

Florida snagged some of the nation's best, including CB Will Hill (Tom Lemming No. 15), LB Brandon Beal (No. 34), DL Omar Hunter (41) and OL Matt Patchan (65). But they also missed out on a few notable recruits who spurned the Gators like Ricky Barnum and LB Ramon Buchanan (73).

"Omar Hunter is the guy we had to have," Meyer said. "He's the marquee player of this class. He hits a need that was obviously lacking last year and he'll come in and contribute right away."

Florida signed three cornerbacks Wednesday and Meyer believes he's going to feature a nickel defense primarily through the first three games of the season at least.
