Irish Starting 2008 Strong

So much for that 3-9 season hurting Notre Dame in the recruiting game. With 11 players in Tom Lemming's Top 100 signed it looks like the Irish could be bringing in the nation's top class.

"The fact that when you're coming off a 3-9 season, and with a lot of these guys they were committed early, they were pummeled, they held together and stayed true to their commitment - with one exception - is a a great testament to their intestinal fortitude," Weis told CSTV's Generation Next Signing Day Show.

Headlining Weis' class are Tom Lemming's No. 8 player, QB Dayne Crist, No. 13 WR Michael Floyd, No. 19 TE Kyle Rudolph and No. 64 OL Trevor Robinson.

That one exception was Omar Hunter (41), a defensive linemen who reneged on his commitment to Notre Dame and decided to play for Urban Meyer at Florida. Weis was not too happy about that and had to get in that subtle shot to Hunter, but he was very pleased with what he managed to put together.

Weis admitted it wasn't the prestige of Notre Dame that attracted arguably the nation's No. 1 class and we know for sure it wasn't last year's success. So how did he pull it off?

"Notre Dame hasn't won a national championship since 1988 and these kids were born in 1990 so they don't remember Notre Dame at the top," Weis said. "I think you just can't recruit because of the Dome. You have to work." National Signing Day Coverage
