Race Between ND and Bama For No. 1

By Adam Caparell - February 06, 2008

With Terrelle Pryor apparently deciding to make his announcement another day, much of the day's attention will be turned to Foley, Ala. WR Julio Jones - Tom Lemming's No. 3 overall player - who is deciding between Alabama, Oklahoma and Florida State. And if Nick Saban can land Jones, that just might push the Crimson Tide to the top of Lemming's class rankings.

"If they grab Julio Jones they could battle Notre Dame for the top spot," Lemming said.

It's clearly coming down to a race between Alabama and Notre Dame to land the distinction of Lemming's top class for 2009. Right now Notre Dame is sitting at No. 1 and has officially landed a number of their top recruits so far Wednesday. But as for who comes on on top, it's way to early to declare a winner.

"It's too close to call," Lemming said. "Julio could decide it, but if Notre Dame can get Milton Knox out of California that could decide it."

Florida was also in the battle for top billing, but losing LB Ramon Buchanan, Lemming's 73rd ranked player, who switched his commitment to Miami from the Gators, put a big dent in Urban Meyer's incoming class.

"He was one of their top prospects," Lemming said. "That takes a little 'Oommph' from them."

Jones will make his decision known shortly after 12:30 pm ET.
