To Hawkins Surprise, CU Lands Scott
By Adam Caparell - February 06, 2008
Colorado's Class of 2008 was shaping up to be a pretty good one, but with the announcement that Darrell Scott - Tom Lemming's No. 2 player in the class - decided Boulder was the place to be, the Buffalos have vaulted up Lemming's team rankings and coach Dan Hawkins is very excited, and surprised, about how things played out.
"You never really know," Hawkins told CSTV's Generation Next Signing Day Show. "I always say these things work out like they're supposed to so you try to do a good job of representing yourself and the university and allowing those guys to matriculate to the place they think they're supposed to."
Scott chose Colorado over Texas in large part because he wanted to play with his uncle, Josh Smith, who will be a sophomore next season.
"He does have his unlce here and he's very close to him and that family tie always plays. I think our staff did a good job of representing where we were and what he could accomplish here," Hawkins said.
No. 97 LB Jon Major inked with Colorado and the Buffalos also picked up underrated running back Ray Polk.
"Everybody always gets into the glitz and glamour of Signing Day, but we wouldn't sign them if we didn't think they were good students and good people and could come in here and contribute," Hawkins said. "Ray Polk is a guy I really love."
