A10-Steal home highlights Bonnies' 3-run first in final

Apparently St. Bonaventure's Matt Mardeusz thinks he's Benny Rodriguez from "The Sandlot." With two outs and the bases loaded, St. Louis' Brock Hewitt chose to pitch from the windup- not a good idea. Two pitches after the Bonnies' third base coach had a conference with batter Tristan Mulcahy, Mardeusz took off from third and slid into home just under Bill Musselman's tag. The Bonnies' faithful jumped up and down in the metal stands, while Mardeusz's teammates rushed out of the dugout to congratulate him.
Mardeusz's run completed the Bonnies' three-run first inning. Mardeusz also had an rbi infield single that ended up scoring two on the play after an error on Hewitt.
In the bottom of the inning, the Billikens got two runners on, but after a sac bunt, a pop-up, and a ground out, they couldn't produce any runs. This has been an ongoing trend in this tournament. These A-10 coaches seem to love to play small ball, no matter what the situation is. The only problem is that the majority of the time, from what I've seen, is that these sac bunts have done nothing but prevent rallies. I'm not a huge Billy Beane fan, and I think certain situations warrant sac bunts, but I also wouldn't bunt with the third man in the lineup in the first inning of a game when there's two guys on. Billiken Johnny Sweeney has a .311 average and is second on the team with 29 rbi, and he bunts in the first inning with two men on? Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe it was Sweeney's personal choice to bunt. I hope so.
The crowd here today isn't the biggest of the tournament, but it does have the most enthusiasm. There is steady cheering from fans of both teams.
Heading into the bottom of the second, the Bonnies lead 3-0.
