A10-St. Louis wins title
By Jacob Schwartzstein - May 28, 2006
In St. Louis' first year in the Atlantic 10, the Billikens will make their first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1966 after finishing off St. Bonaventure, 7-0.
Eric Mueller came into the game in the ninth to the tune of "Enter Sandman" and closed it out for the Billikens. After the final play of the game, a groundout to shortstop Ziggy Moore, the Billikens tossed their hats and gloves in the air and met each other in front of the mound, jumping up and down in unison as the Billikens fans cheered. Rightfielder Ryan Crespi rolled around on the ground in jubilation.
After the game, tournament awards and trophies were handed out. Of the players here today, St. Bonaventure's Joe Rizzo, Randy Moley, Matt Agositnelli, and John Zinnicker were named to the All-Tournament team, while St. Louis' Ryan Bird and Bill Musselman also received that honor.
Bird, who pitched eight shutout innings in today's championship game, was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
When the Billikens received their championship trophy and Musselman held it over his head, the players all reached their hands up to touch it.
That's all from the A-10 tournament. It's been a pleasure to report from Fordham the past few days.
In the words of Billy Madison, "Peace! I'm outta herrre."
