A10-Tension mounts
By Jacob Schwartzstein - May 24, 2006
It's the bottom of the eighth inning, a run has finally scored, and the crowd is making some noise.
After a very slow start to the game, there have been some amazing defensive plays that have momentarily awoken the loyal fans who came to see a ballgame, not to see Dayton ballplayers strutt their stuff down the first base runway. The latest great play, made by Dayton third baseman Joe McSoley when he made the third out of the top of the eighth by reaching over the railing of his dugout to catch a popup, has gotten the Flyers fans riled up, and this excitement has carried over into the bottom half of the inning.
Derrik Lutz, who finished with seven walks, continued to pitch for the Colonials into the eighth inning even though he threw over 130 pitches. Unfortunately for the Colonials, Lutz could not keep the Flyers off the scoreboard any longer, giving up an rbi single with one out in the bottom of the eighth. He was finally taken out after that, though relief pitcher Pat Lehman gave up another run scoring hit, making it 2-0 Flyers heading into the ninth.
