Big 12: Baylor Off the Schneid

By Glenn Tanner - May 27, 2006

Baylor closed out Texas Tech 5-3, breaking a five-game losing streak and possibly avoiding a no-bid in the process.

The Bears got a three-run homer from SS Beemer Weems, who produced two doubles, three homers, and solid defense in his trip to Bricktown, making a strong case for the All-Tournament team. Tech actually out-hit Baylor 11-9, but allowed four unearned runs and left the tying run on base in the 9th.

I’m really looking forward to this next game, as Texas and Nebraska square off for the right to play in the championship game tomorrow. When asked about the Nebraska game, Augie Garrido quipped, “Nebraska always beats us.” Well, actually, they don’t. The Horns and Huskers have been the class of the Big 12 conference since year 2000, regularly playing great games before sold out crowds. And the cumulative series record since 2000? Nebraska 12 wins, Texas 12 wins. The series has been so even that neither team has enjoyed more than a one-game advantage in any season’s series. Because Nebraska took two of three in Austin in April, that statistic seems to favor the Longhorns today.

Texas ace Kyle McCullough will face off against the Huskers’ Johnny Dorn, who completely shut down the Longhorns’ bats earlier this season.

The Fox Sports regional channels are televising this game, so you have my permission to flip away from CSTV to watch it. Game time should be about 1:30 pm.
