Big 12: Kansas Upsets Oklahoma, 7-2

By Glenn Tanner - May 24, 2006

6th-seeded Kansas rode some early-game power hitting and a strong pitching performance from Kodiak Quick to knock off the 3rd-seeded Sooners before 5K+ quiet and sad Oklahomans at Bricktown Ballpark.

Quick, a Stanford transfer, has an awkward delivery that looks like he's begging for a rotator cuff injury, but he kept the Sooners off-balance for seven innings with pin-point control.

The Jayhawk bats produced seven extra-base hits in the first five innings, including two doubles and a homer from leadoff hitter Matt Baty. After starting catcher Dylan Parzyk tweaked a hammy in the second inning, Buck Afenir replaced him and delivered two hits and three RBI.

We also got to see national saves leader Don Czyz (pronounced "chez") pitch the ninth. He threw fastballs in the low 90's and an 85 mph slider. Wicked.

Final note: I know that I earlier called Quick the captain of the All-Name Team, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong. Here's the captain.

Missouri and Oklahoma State start at 8:40.
