Big 12: Nebraska Wins Game and Pool, 6-5

By Glenn Tanner - May 27, 2006

It was another classic between Texas and Nebraska. Nebraska scored a run in the 8th to take a 6-5 lead, and Brett Jensen shut down the Longhorns' attempted rally.

The Huskers got great relief pitching (5.1 innings, 0 runs) from Tony Watson, three hits and two walks from Brandon Buckman, and a huge home run from Nick Sullivan to win 6-5.

The Longhorns’ effort was highlighted by Chance Wheeless’ three hits and Randy Boone’s heroic relief performance, as he entered the game with the bases loaded and none out in the 8th and allowed no runs to score.

It’s a damn shame these two teams only play 3-4 times a season, because almost every time they play it’s an intense, hard-fought game. Since 2000, these teams have played 25 times, with Nebraska holding a 13-12 lead.

The next session features a not-your-ordinary meaningless game between two 0-2 teams, because the 0-2 teams are Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. If the Bedlam rivalry weren’t enough, both teams came into the tournament hoping to host a regional as a #1 seed, but those dreams are really up in the air for both teams now. There is some speculation that the winner of this game will get a #1 seed and the loser a #2.

Game time will be 5:20.

Wow! What a day for my Huskers. They played outstanding against a even better Texas team, who is not given enough credit for how good they really are. Anyway rumor has it that Klaussing is starting tomorrow and I believe regardless of who wins between Kansas and Missouri, Nebraska wins back-to-back BIG XII Champs.

What a game. I still havent gotten over it. Watson dominated texas for five innings. Huskers are on their way to Omaha.
