Big 12: Play Ball!
By Glenn Tanner - May 24, 2006
Greetings from Oklahoma City! Is there a more enjoyable stretch of highway in this country than I-35 between San Marcos and Oklahoma City? Actually, yes... JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER ONE. 434 miles of 18-wheelers, state troopers, a freakin' *LOOSE TIRE* bouncing through the lanes in Fort Worth that ALMOST GOT ME IN A PILEUP, THE ENDLESS CONSTRUCTION IN SOUTHERN OKLAHOMA... settle down man... go to your happy place, go to your happy place... Wait a minute, I *AM* in my happy place! I'm at Bricktown Ballpark watching Nebraska and Baylor! Life is good!
My "home" minor league park, Dell Diamond in Round Rock, was recently named the top minor league park in the country. OKC should demand a recount. Bricktown Ballpark is spectacular! The setting is great -- right downtown, surrounded by bars and restaurants. The construction is beautiful -- it most reminds me of the Texas Rangers' home stadium. And there are great tributes to Oklahoma's baseball history all over the place. There are statues of natives Mickey Mantle and Warren Spahn and busts of Allie Reynolds and Bobby Murcer outside the stadium. Inside are handsome biographic displays of Carl Hubbell, Johnny Bench, Pepper Martin, and Jim Thorpe. There are also similar displays of some of the state's historic teams, including the 1906 Boston Bloomers, an "Indiahoma" women's baseball team. Great stuff!
Nebraska and Baylor are in game 1. Charlie Shirek and Randall Linebaugh are matching up on the hill and we've just finished two scoreless innings here, but I don't expect that to last. The last two days have seen a blast furnace of a wind blowing from the south, straight out to center. It was strong enough to add five miles per gallon to my gas milage yesterday, so it should also turn some long fly balls into home runs. More later.
