Big 12: Slugfest at Bricktown

By Glenn Tanner - May 27, 2006

Texas and Nebraska are trading punches like two heavyweights and are tied 5-5 at the end of three innings.

Texas manufactured single runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings, but Nebraska exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the 2nd, the big hit being a 3-run wind-aided homer by DH Nick Sullivan. Texas answered in their next at-bat with four singles and three runs to tie the game. The rally forced the Huskers to pull starter Johnny Dorn, and the reliever was a big surprise – Tony Watson, who was scheduled to start tomorrow if Nebraska were to win today. Missouri and Kansas have to be enjoying this.

The clouds have mostly burned off here, and it’s hot and VERRRRRY windy.

It really wasn't that big of a suprise to me that Anderson brought in Watson. Listening to Nebraska's radio pre-game show, they basically said, if Dorn struggles, then Watson will come out of the bullpen. I actually thought Anderson should have made the move earlier.

Surprise or not? It was a surprise to me in that he was the scheduled starter tomorrow. It wasn't a surprise (and it was the right move) because if they didn't win today, Watson being available tomorrow would have been irrelevant.

Childress will now choose between Jon Klausing and Tim Radmacher to start the championship game. These two guys have pitched a total of 32 innings this season.

Childress is no longer the pitching coach at NU, he is now the head coach at Texas A&M. BINGHAM will now have to choose between Klausing and Radmacher. Also, Byrd, Herr, and even Shirek should all be decently fresh to pitch tomorrow.
