Big 12: Texas Bombs Baylor 16-8
By Glenn Tanner - May 25, 2006
16 runs on 20 hits for the Longhorns, who have fully recovered from last weekend's disaster in Columbia, MO.
After Texas put the lucky number 7 on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th, the suspense was mostly gone from this game.
A few mildly interesting notes:
Take a look at the Texas hitters’ boxscore when it’s posted and you’ll notice something’s missing -- zeros. Every Longhorn starter had at least one hit, at least one RBI, and at least one run scored. In fact, you really won’t see that many 1’s in those columns either. This was a team batting practice for the Horns.
With a 12-4 lead in the middle of the fourth, Augie Garrido elected to go to his bullpen, saving starting pitcher Riley Boening’s arm for Sunday’s game.
Baylor catcher Zach Dillon, who batted .421 in Big 12 play, has gone 0-for-8 so far in the tournament. And just think, it was only a couple of days ago that some idiot slogger wrote that Dillon “may be the most underrated player in the country.”
Texas has now won six games in a row over Baylor.
The Bears also got swept in their final regular season series at Kansas State. Their RPI ranking was 32 coming into today. They might need a win Saturday against Tech to get a regional bid.
The second game of the night (Nebraska-Tech) is now scheduled to start at 9:00.
