Big East: Notre Dame presses on

By Barry Loudis - May 24, 2006

The Irish come out on top 12-4 over the West Virginia Mountaineers in the final game of today's Big East Championship.

Notre Dame pressed on with a four-run seventh and a two-run eighth tonight keeping West Virginia at arms length.

Winning pitcher Jeff Samardzija pitched eight complete innings and pushed his record to 8-2 on the year Hey, did you hear that he plays football too???

Tomorrow's matchups should be pretty good. There are two elimination games in the afternoon Connecticut vs. Rutgers at 4 p.m. and West Virginia vs. St. John's at 7 p.m.. Losing teams go home and winners get to play on Friday. If things were to go according to their seed, Louisville will actually play Connecticut three times in this tournament. That is taking into account that Connecticut beats Rutgers tomorrow and gets one past Louisville on Friday. That would force a second game on Friday between the two the winner of which would go to the championship game on Saturday. If I were to venture a guess, I would say that three matchups between these two teams are pretty likely. We will have to see how things go, however.

Notre Dame looks too strong to stop right now and I would look forward to them beating West Virginia again on Friday.

As it was brought to my attention by fellow blogger Jessica Garrison, at the conclusion of this last game I would have witnessed 72 innings of baseball. That is an awful lot to digest in less than 37 hours but I am looking forward to the next 45 to 63 innings still to be played. I hope that my commentary has been an decent addition to the full slate of College Baseball Championship Central content being offered by CSTV. It is really a great move in bringing the best fans in the world, college sports fans, the most complete and entertaining coverage possible.
