Tulane lit up the scoreboard for 12 runs on 20 hits in the first elimination game on Thursday, sending Marshall home in a run-rule shortened 12-1 contest.
The Green Wave tied a season high with 20 hits and scored runs in seven of the eight innings, while holding the Thundering Herd to a single run on five hits. Each Tulane starter hit safely in the contest, led by leadoff hitter Matt Riser's career-high four knocks. Brandon Gomes pitched six strong innings, limiting Marshall to four hits and four walks while striking out four Herd batters. The damage could have been greater, but the victors stranded 13 runners in the contest.
Third baseman Adam Frederick collected two of Marshall's five hits and drove in their lone run, while reliever Brian Knippelmeyer extended the game by stranding two runners in the seventh.
Tulane advances to the third day of the tournament, where they'll face the loser of this afternoon's contest between Houston and East Carolina. Marshall's season ends with a 22-32 mark in their first season in Conference USA.
First pitch is tentatively set for 12:40 for the second elimination game between UAB and Memphis.
