CUSA: And That's a Wrap

By Jeremy Mills - May 24, 2006

Thirteen hours and 17 minutes after the first pitch was thrown, Southern Miss wrapped up a 6-2 win over #4 Memphis to complete the first day of the C-USA Tournament.

Three Golden Eagle pitchers combined to down Memphis in the final opening round game. Southern Miss will play Rice tomorrow evening at 7:30, while the Tigers will battle UAB in an elimination game at 12:30 in the afternoon. Toddric Johnson was the offensive star for USM, finishing the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Starter Barry Bowden, starting for the tenth time this season, gave up seven hits while striking out six Tigers over 6 2/3 innings. Seven different Southern Miss batters collected hits, as the Golden Eagles' fourteen hits was the highest total of the day at Reckling Park.

Memphis got hits from each of their top seven batters, but was unable to push a run across until the final frame. Pinch hitter Robbie Goss drew a walk, moved to third on a K.K. Chalmers double and scored when Will Petersen legged out an infield hit. Chalmers scored the final run of the game on a groundout later in the inning. Philip Utley gave up 5 runs on 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings, though only one hit was for extra bases.

That wraps up Wednesday's action from Reckling Park. If you still need baseball today, check out the Mountain West Tournament, where several long games have pushed the New Mexico-TCU finale to a midnight Eastern time first pitch.
