CUSA: Free Baseball in Houston

Both teams threatened to break the tie in the ninth, but Tulane and East Carolina are heading to extra innings tied at one.

Shane Mathews had the longest outing of his career for East Carolina, pitching 8 1/3 before allowing a double to Brad Emaus and intentionally walking Tim Guidry. The Pirates went to the pen, and T.J. Hose got out of trouble with a popup to center and a grounder to first base.

After Jacob Dean struck out to lead of the bottom of the frame, but Jay Mattox singled up the middle to end the afternoon for Wave reliever Trey Martin. Coach Godwin rolled the dice and called for a hit-and-run, and pinch-hitter Drew Schieber hit the first pitch from Daniel Latham right to the moving second baseman, and the Wave turned a splendid double play to send the game into the tenth inning.

East Carolina first base coach Clayton McCullough was ejected in the eighth inning for arguing a close play at first that ended the inning. It looked like umpire Don Novak bumped into McCullough before giving him the heave.

Both groups of fans have grown more vocal as the game is on the line. Numerous call and response cheers of "Green", "Wave" by the Tulane fans. The Pirates faithful have been responding with a "Purple", "Gold" cheer of their own.
