CUSA: Grisham Offers No Suspense for Southern Miss
By Jeremy Mills - May 26, 2006
The Golden Eagles batted around in the second inning, driving Memphis starter Ben Grisham from the game and claiming a 4-2 lead after 3 1/2 innings.
Grisham retired the side in order in the first, but trouble arose right away in the second frame. The first two batters of the inning walked, and back-to-back singles scored the first Golden Eagle run of the game and left the bases loaded. Bo Davis walked with the bases loaded to force in the second run with no outs before the Tigers caught a break. Brian Dozier grounded to short and the forceout was made at second but the other runners advanced. However, the second base umpire determined that Bo Davis had slid late and ruled interference -- the result was two outs and no advancement by the other runners. Trey Sutton drove Grisham from the game with a two-run single, before Toddric Johnson lined to third to end the inning.
Memphis has tallied single runs in the first and third innings. K.K. Chalmers reached on an error to lead off the game, stole his 38th base, and scored on a double by Bill Moss. In the third, Will Petersen doubled with one out, and moved to third on a single by Moss. Adam Amar hit a grounder to short and Moss slid into second in a play that looked familiar to the Golden Eagle fans, but interference was not called this time. Petersen scored the second Tiger run of the game to cut the lead to 4-2.
Cliff Russum has been effective for the Golden Eagles, allowing four hits through four innings while throwing just fifty pitches (and a paltry five in the fourth).
The crowd is smaller for this game than it was for the matinee. The small contingent of Tiger fans is quite vocal (and right in front of the press box), while the Southern Miss fans are always in the game (especially on the calls at second today!).
