CUSA: Let's Get Ready to Rumble

By Jeremy Mills - May 25, 2006

The second day of the Conference USA Tournament is underway, with the Tulane Green Wave battling the Marshall Thundering Herd in the first elimination game of the day.

Brandon Gomes takes the hill for the Wave with a 5-6 record and 4.96 record on the season. Tulane is doing their best UNC imitation, taking the field in tarheel blue tops. Marshall counters with Jeremy Slone, who recorded a 3-7 record and 4.75 ERA in his fourteen starts this season.

The crowd numbered around 75 as the first pitch was thrown at 9:03 am. Most of those assembled are here for the Wave, as evidenced by the resounding "Home of the Wave" at the end of the national anthem this morning. On that vein, flags around Texas are at halfmast this week in honor of the passing of Senator Lloyd Bentsen.

Here's the schedule for the rest of the day (all times Central):

12:30 -- #4 Memphis Tigers versus #8 UAB Blazers in the second elimination game
4:00 -- #2 Houston Cougars versus #6 East Carolina Pirates in the winners' bracket
7:30 -- #1 Rice Owls versus #5 Southern Miss Golden Eagles on the other side of the winners' bracket

Wave leftfielder Matt Riser led of the game with a double but was stranded at third, so we go the bottom of the 1st with no score.
